Pipes are the lifeblood of your home, in the context of both water and heating. Your residential or commercial energy system essentially runs on a network of pipes. The more efficient and durable the pipes, the better your water pressure and temperature. We know all about pipes, as experts in gas and plumbing.
But it is not just the materials used (typically copper or PEX). The pipes need to be arranged in the right way to facilitate flow and to make the best use of space. They need to travel seamlessly from one end of the house to the other.
At Fluid Plumbing and Gas Services, we take pride not just in delivering the most appropriate material. We arrange the pipes perfectly so that you don’t run into problems down the line. We also secure the pipers at regular intervals with ‘pips’ for reinforcement. We are experts in all things relating to pipes, offering the best pipe relining, pipe installations and pipeline plumbing. And we are known as the best pipes repair services in Canberra and beyond.
Copper and PEX are the major kinds of pipes. Copper pipes, 20mm in diameter, run under your front garden and pop up under the house or on the side. Copper is naturally resistant to bacteria and shouldn’t melt in a house fire. PEX piping (a flexible plastic piping) is a lower-cost alternative – the material is cheaper and installation times are reduced. It has a shorter warranty and is not UV resistant (so it can only be used under the house), but it’s more energy efficient and tolerates chlorine and scale better than copper.
What About Drain And Sewer Pipes?
While the water pipes in your home may be made of copper or PEX, the drain and sewer pipes are made of PVC. This is because both pipes will carry different materials. Also, while the water pipes often need to carry water upwards, you certainly only want your waste going downwards! Gravity is used to let the water flow downward. If you look under your bathroom sink, you will notice the pipe has a U-shaped bend. This is to prevent unpleasant odours from escaping and to prevent sewage from the pipe system from flowing upwards into your sink. These are known as ‘Traps’.
What Are The Main Components In a Typical Water Pipe?
There is the pipe itself, then there are the clips which serve to secure the pipes and prevent loud noises when a tap is turned off. The valves allow you to turn off the water at a given juncture, and there are different kinds of valves available. The joints between lengths of the copper pipes are vital to maintaining a dry house. They should be silver soldered for strength, and any waste solder should be wiped off so the joints are clean.
Where Do Water Pipes Run In A House?
The pipe, called the water or supply line, carries water from the mainline to your house. The supply line is buried deep enough underneath the property that it won’t freeze, and it runs from the ground directly into the home. Supply lines are usually made of plastic, galvanized iron, or (ideally) copper.
